Award winners to receive ₹1 lakh and a token of honor

Mumbai, Mumbai Sports, an organization dedicated to uplifting the sports sector, is focused on improving sports infrastructure in Mumbai and keeping various sports alive in the city. Last year, the organization began an initiative to recognize emerging athletes in the sports field by introducing the Sportspersons of the Year awards. The inaugural awards honored Diya Chitle (Table Tennis) and Chirag Shetty (Badminton) with ₹1 lakh each and a token of honor. Additionally, athletes such as Apeksha Fernandes (Swimming), Nishika Kale (Rhythmic Gymnastics), Ishpreet Singh Chadha (Snooker), and Nikhil Dubey (Boxing) were also recognized with a token of honor.

 

For this year, the nominations for the 2023-24 Sportspersons of the Year award are open until November 9. The selection committee consists of prominent athletes from Mumbai, representatives from the sports department, the Mumbai Sports Journalist Association, and the Mumbai Marathi Sports Journalists Association. The final selection will be made by an award screening committee, chaired by M. Somaiya and consisting of Jaya Shetty, Pradeep Gandhe, Uday Deshpande, Dattu Phadtare, Sanjay Gharpure, and Sandeep Kadam. The award ceremony will take place on the evening of November 28 at the Bant Sangh in Kurla.

 


To be eligible for the award, athletes who are permanent residents of Mumbai and have achieved excellence in state, national, or international sports are encouraged to apply. Nominations can be submitted by the athletes themselves or by their respective organizations or federations. The winners will be honored with ₹1 lakh each, sponsored by the legendary sports figure Madhukar Talwalkar, and the award ceremony was supported by Sanjay Shettye and Jay Kawli, who had contributed ₹50,000 each for the awards last year. Additionally, the Sherdil Bants Association of Mumbai is providing the venue and other necessary facilities for the event.

 

Mumbai Sports is led by Chairman Adil Sumarivala, Coordinator Jay Kawli, and includes members like Jaya Shetty, Pradeep Gandhe, Uday Deshpande, Sudarshan Nair, Sanjay Shettye, Bhaskar Sawant, Arvind Prabhu, and Namdev Shirgaonkar, all prominent sports enthusiasts and contributors to the field.
